D.O. Pago Casa del Blanco
The Pago Casa Del Blanco large state has a smaller wild game preserve of 2,200 Ha, where native red partridge prevails, another one of 650 Ha for cereal and irrigated land, and finally 150 Ha. of vineyard. We also have to mention especially the horse breeding, which also takes place in our installations.
After 20 years of research and different grape varieties restructuring; nowadays Pago Casa del Blanco has 12 varieties, 4 of them are for white wine and 8 for red wine.
White Varieties: Airen (Gobelet and dry varieties), Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Muscatel de Grano Menudo –also known as Muscat de Frontignan- (in espalier and drip irrigation).
Red Varieties: Tempranillo (11 Ha. older than 40 years with an output of 2,500 kg/Ha), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Garnacha.
We are convinced that, in order to produce maximum quality wines, it is essential the loving care of the raw material: the grape. This is the reason why all our efforts are not only focused on the winery, but also on the land. The supervision and selection of our best grapes will make possible our great wines. In this sense, we usually harvest between 3,000 and 4,000 grape kg./Ha.
The respect we have for our environment makes us to feel especially sensitive in view of some practices that involve the over-exploitation and abuse of so prized resources in the region such as water. We do not abuse of watering as we don’t use water as an instrument to overproduce, but as a tool that lets us get very concentrated and balanced fruits, which have exceptional quality parameters. This will help us to produce our wines with full guarantees.
As a matter of fact, the Pago Casa Del Blanco large state has several wells where we extract water from. They are all linked to a hydraulic network that pours out its content into a dam. From that point, water is pumped to all the large state by means of a drip irrigation system. All the same, before this stage, water is pre-filtered by means of hydro cyclone and slot filters.
We also use drip irrigation to carry out the land’s dressing by means of fertilization. It is all about to perform the culture practices that fit in the best way in our soil (limy, sandy and with a basic pH) and extreme continental weather.
After the color change, we intensify controls on the different smallholdings with the aim of harvesting the grape in the most optimum and suitable moment according to the kind of wines we want to produce. It is in this moment when the grape harvest begins
